Abstract
In order to analyze factors which would influence suicidal ideation and suicidal attempt of the elderly, this study used a primitive data from the fifth national nutrition survey conducted between 2010 and 2011. The survey was carried out targeting a total of 3,076 old people over the age of 65 and with the missing values which have not responded to the survey excluded, 2,845 of them cooperated in the study as the final research participants. According to the results from the multi-variate logistic regression analysis on those factors which have been considered to be significantly related to the suicidal ideation and the suicidal attempt, the factors were observed to be significantly influential in the suicidal ideation when it is a woman, when the age is over 75, when this person has never gone to school or gone to school only for one year to six years, when this person¡¯s gross family income has been ¡¯low¡¯, when the person has quitted smoking or is currently smoking, when the person suffers from a chronic disease, when the person gets seven hours of sleep a night on average, when the person recognizes stress well or just averagely and last but not least, when the person feels depressed for the second consecutive week or longer. In terms of the factors to have a significant influence on the suicidal attempt, the elderly are more likely to make such attempt when the gender is male and when this person feels depressed for more than two weeks in a row.
In conclusion, as long as we want to reduce this high suicidal ideation of the elderly in South Korea, preventing and sorting out such ideas, we need to approach the problem multi-dimensionally. In addition, the study also believes that if the central government mediates in those risky factors investigated by this research, such act of the government will make a contribution to preventing suicides committed by the elderly, lowering their suicidal ideation.
